Good morning, Southside! 🌴

Friday is 9/04 and this year it happens to kick off a three-day weekend. The forecast is classic early September: low 90s, an afternoon storm most days, and the tropics are leaving us alone for once (Edouard went to Texas). Plan for mornings and evenings, and keep an indoor option in your back pocket for 3 o'clock.

Quick favor: hit reply with your zip code (if you haven't already). Takes five seconds, tells me which corners of the Southside to dig into, and teaches your inbox that we belong in Primary.

Here's what's worth leaving the house for 👇

  • 🎉 904 Day on the river: a free First Friday party at Riverfront Plaza with live music and food trucks

  • 🖼️ The Cummer is free all Friday afternoon, with music and lawn games in the gardens

  • 🏒 The Icemen unveil their new jerseys at the Igloo on Philips Highway

  • 🚚 Monster Jam, three shows across Saturday and Sunday

  • 🏃 A Labor Day morning 5K through Beauclerc, then $12 ice skating that afternoon

Let's get to it. -S

TOGETHER WITH COMMUNITY FIRST IGLOO

It's going to be 93 degrees on Saturday. There's a sheet of ice on Philips Highway.
Community First Igloo, at 3605 Philips Hwy, is where the Jacksonville Icemen practice. The rest of the week it's the neighborhood's rink: public skating sessions most days, $18 to get on the ice, $10 for kids five and under, $8 if you need skates, and free on Monday mornings if you show the Publix app. They run learn-to-skate classes, youth and adult hockey leagues, and birthday parties, and there's a tap house for whoever is holding the coats.

No money changed hands for this placement and this slot is free while we're small. Run a Jacksonville business? Get on the list →

📰 In Case You Missed It

A few Jacksonville things worth knowing, minus the doom-scroll:

  • 🍦 Jeni's is coming to Five Points. The Ohio ice cream chain is taking a spot at 1020 Park St in the Five Points Theatre building. No opening date yet. (Jacksonville Today)

  • 🔭 MOSH showed what the new museum will look like. Five stories and 125,000 square feet on the Shipyards, with an immersive theater in place of the old planetarium. They want to break ground early next year and have raised close to $100 million of a $150 million goal. (Jacksonville Today)

  • ✈️ JAX gets six more gates in January. Concourse B gets its ribbon cutting January 27, with the first flights the next day. (Jacksonville Today)

  • 🦐 Beachside Seafood is closing the restaurant in October. The Jax Beach spot on Third Street has been there since 1954, and the building needs more work than they can do around daily service. The market stays open, and you've got a few weeks to get a last plate. (Jacksonville Today)

📥 Two quick things

  • Know someone who'd like this? Forward it their way. It's the best way to help us grow.

  • If we landed in your Promotions tab, drag us to Primary so you never miss a weekend.

That's the weekend, Southside. Go do one thing off this list, then reply and tell me how it went.

See you next Thursday,
