Good morning, Southside! 🌴
The Jaguars are in Denver on Sunday, 4:05 on CBS 47, which means for once the whole city is not pointed at one place all afternoon. Good weekend to use that.
Saturday is the busy day. The Main Library is handing out a full day of authors, free books and kid stuff, there are more than four hundred quilts at the Prime Osborn, and somebody is running a wing-eating contest in the Railyard with hot sauce from the guy who used to play guitar in Guns N' Roses. Sunday is dogs and soccer.
Still hot, still storming most afternoons, so do the outdoor things early and save the indoor ones for three o'clock.
Quick favor: hit reply with your zip code (if you haven't already). Takes five seconds, tells me which corners of the Southside to dig into, and teaches your inbox that we belong in Primary.
Here's what's worth leaving the house for 👇
📚 A free all-day book festival at the Main Library, three bestsellers and 120 local authors
🧵 Four hundred and twenty quilts and fifty vendors at the Prime Osborn, Friday and Saturday
🌶️ A wing-eating contest and hot sauce showdown at Myrtle Avenue Brewing, free to walk in
🐕 Barkfest on the Riverwalk Sunday, free, with a best-trick contest at two
Let's get to it. -S
TOGETHER WITH THE COMEDY ZONE
There has been a working comedy club on Hartley Road since 1984, and most of Mandarin drives past it.
The Comedy Zone is inside the Ramada at 3130 Hartley Road, about ten minutes from most of Mandarin and San Jose. Touring headliners play Friday and Saturday, local comics get the room on Sunday nights, and there is a full bar and a kitchen with table service, so you order from your seat instead of standing in a line. Doors open an hour before each show, seats get assigned at will call in the order people walk in, and every show is 21 and up.

🌟 This Week's Pick
Jax Book Fest at the Main Library
The library gives away a whole day of this every year and not enough people know about it. Saturday, 9:30 to 4, downtown, free to walk in. Three New York Times bestsellers are on the schedule: John Patrick Green (the InvestiGators graphic novels, so bring the eight-year-old) at 10, Jennifer Lynn Barnes (The Inheritance Games, bring the teenager) at noon, and Emma Straub (American Fantasy) at 3, each with a signing right after. Around all of that, 120-plus local authors selling and signing their own books, food trucks, a photo booth, free face painting, a robot maze, bubbles, book giveaways, and a manatee meet-and-greet, which I am choosing not to ask questions about. 📰 In Case You Missed It
A few Jacksonville things worth knowing, minus the doom-scroll:
🏬 They started tearing down Regency Square Mall. Demolition began Monday on the east wing, between Impact Church and the closed JCPenney. It is the first real move in the plan to turn the 59-year-old mall into a mixed-use district for Arlington. (Jacksonville Today)
☕ A pug cafe is opening on Beach Boulevard. CuppaPug, which has European locations, is taking about 2,400 square feet at 14180 Beach Blvd near San Pablo, opening in November. Coffee, plus a room full of pugs, run with Pug Rescue of Florida & Georgia to get adoptable ones seen. (Jacksonville Today)
⚓ The USS Jacksonville is here, in pieces. The submarine's sail, rudders and other parts rolled into town this week. They get restored and reassembled for display next to the USS Orleck. (Jacksonville Today)
🏗️ The Riverfront Plaza tower cleared its vote. Two weeks ago Gateway Jax was asking for conceptual approval at the foot of the Main Street Bridge. Wednesday the DIA approved close to $55 million in incentives for the hotel and condo tower, and it heads to City Council next. (First Coast News)
